What condition can demodex mites cause?

Demodex mites are microscopic parasites that inhabit the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin, particularly on the face. They are often associated with skin conditions and can lead to various complications.

One significant effect of an overpopulation of demodex mites on the eyelashes is madarosis, which refers to partial or complete loss of eyelashes (and can also apply to eyebrows). This condition arises because the mites can cause inflammation and irritation, disrupting the normal hair growth cycle and leading to hair loss.

The association of demodex mites with madarosis highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy balance of these microorganisms, as excessive numbers can lead to visible and distressing changes in appearance. In contrast, while other conditions like styes, corneal ulcers, and conjunctivitis may also involve eyelashes or eye health, they are not directly caused by demodex mites in the same way that madarosis is.
